Alvaro C. Achilles

Alvaro C. Achilles was born on 30 May 1824 at Potton, Brome Co, Quebec, Canada.1,2 He was the son of Charles Baum Achilles and Mary Montgomery. Alvaro C. Achilles married Drusilla H. Traver on 30 December 1847 at Georgeville, Stanstead Co, Quebec, Canada.3 Alvaro C. Achilles and Drusilla H. Traver appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Almond, Portage Co, WI, enumerated 16 June 1880. Their children Almina and Ella Luella were listed as living with them.4 Alvaro C. Achilles died on 11 January 1902 at Almond, Portage Co, WI, at age 77.5 He was buried on 12 January 1902 at Almond City Cemetery, Almond, Portage Co, WI.5 "Died Achilles (Georgeville). We learn of the recent death of a former resident of this place, Mr. Alvaro Achilles who died at his home in Almond, Portage Co., WI aged 79 years. Journal dated Feb 6, 1902."6
Alvaro Copp Achilles came to Portage County, Wisconsin in the 1850's. He was born in Canada in 1824. He was married in his native country to Drusilla H. Traver. He was a farmer. When gold was discovered in California in 1849 he contracted the fever and was one of those to make the weary, perilous journey. In 1855 he came to Portage County, making the trip by ox-team and shortly thereafter located on a farm on the Stevens Point wagon road in Almond Township which he purchased from the U.S. government. He grew hops on his land. They were the parents of 7 children. He was a charter member of Plover Lodge of Masons and belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church.7

On the morning of June 14, 1888, Miss Ella L. Achilles bid adieu to her family and friends and passed from the shadows of earth to the joys of heaven. Miss Achilles was born in the town of Almond in March, 1860, was educated at the Almond High School and has for the past eight years been a faithful teacher in our schools, the last six years in charge of one of the rooms of our village school. She was buried Saturday, June 16 in our village cemetery, Rev. F. B. Sherwin preaching the funeral sermon.

Emma Jane Achilles married Heman Alonzo Soule on 14 September 1874 at Almond, Portage Co, WI.2 Emma Jane Achilles and Heman Alonzo Soule appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Almond, Portage Co, WI, enumerated 16 June 1880. Their children Edith May and Elmer Edwin were listed as living with them.3 Emma Jane Achilles died on 26 January 1939 at Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI, at age 82.1

Mrs. Emma Soule aged 83 a resident of Portage Co., for many years passed away at the home of her son Elmer, in Stevens Point, Friday, Jan 26, 1939. Mrs. Soule was born on Aug 18, 1856 in Canada. During her infancy the family came to the U.S. and located on a farm in the town of Almond. She resided at the home of her parents, Alvaro and Drusilla Achilles, until her marriage, which took place Sept 14, 1874, in Almond to Herman Soule of Almond. The couple resided on a farm in the town of Almond until Mr. Soule passed away October 30, 1900. Mrs. Soule continued to live on the homestead for a time and later moved to the village of Almond. About three years ago she moved to Stevens Point. She is mourned by two sons, Ellery Soule of Rhineland and Elmer E. Soule of Stevens Point and a daughter, Mrs. Edith Gustin of Seymour. She was a member of the Almond Methodist Church and of the Eastern Star lodge of Almond. She is buried in the Almond City Cemetery.
She was buried on 4 February 1940 at Almond Cemetery, Almond, Portage Co, WI.

Crowell, a native of Maine, was an Almond merchant, and the home he built in 1876 was occupied for 91 year, until 1967, by members of the family. It is still one of the larger homes in Almond. George and Hannah's son, Orestes Alvaro Crowell, founded the Portage County Bank at Almond and the family was in the banking business there until 1952. George Crowell died in 1891 and Hannah in 1898.
