Former Mayor Died on Sunday
Robt. Thielman was one of the best known Business Men Throughout State; Was a Tomahawk Booster
In the passing of Robert C. Thielman, Tomahawk loses one if the best boosters she ever had – a man who never lost faith in the community in which he lived and despite the ups and downs which every northern lumber mill town experiences he always looked ahead to the day when she could hold her head with any of her neighbors and say “it is good.”
Perhaps no man who ever lived in Tomahawk enjoyed a wider acquaintance than did “Bob’ Thileman. Coming to the city in an early day – even in fact, before the city had been founded, it is no wonder then that her fortunes meant much to him and thus when opportunity presented itself to serve that he answered that call.
His many years of residence here have been indelibly stamped with the life and growth of the city. To him must go a lion’s share of the credit for the ownership of Bradley Park – a gem of the northwoods and the envy of every city in the state. Despite plenty of opposition against its purchase for what seemed a huge sum of money, he worked for its purchase and today the city is may thousands of dollars richer in more ways than one because it does have this wonderful park.
Locates in South
About five years ago, Mr. Thielman became interested in the Oil Fields Corporation of El Dorado, Ark., and after a careful investigation he together with others from this city invested heavily in its stock. Like many such undertakings, it did not prove a successful venture because of crooked work on the part of its officers. When the company was about to pass out of existence, Mr. Thielman realizing that his reputation was at stake, threw himself bodily into recuperating the company and saving the investment of his friends. It was a long and hard battle and just as victory was being rewarded, he was taken sick early this spring. He came home for a short while and then returned to his work. A few weeks ago he underwent an operation. Cheerful reports came of his recuperation and then one day word came that he had suffered a serious relapse and Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Welfley hurried to his bedside at El Dorado, Ark. Mrs. Welfley stayed on after the crisis and last week his two brothers, Louis of the Town of Harrison and Theo. of Milwaukee made a trip to El Dorado to see him. They found him in a bad condition in a stifling hot climate and they realized that a change to a cooler climate might have some good effects. He was therefore brought home arriving here last Thursday morning. However his last stay at home was to be of a short duration and the wasted frame of the powerful man that he had want to be, soon released him from the suffering that must have been intense but of which he made no complaint and at an early hour Sunday morning, the spark of life was snuffed out.
Was an Early Settler
Robert C. Thielman, son of Gottfried Thielman and Julia Baum was born on December 1, 1866 at Watertown, Wis. He attended the public schools in Watertown and then for two years was a student at Northwestern College in that city. In 1881 he came to Merrill and with his brother Jule, now a resident of that city, he started in the meat business. Even before the railroad had been built into the then future city of Tomahawk, he hauled meat by wagon from Merrill to the construction camps along the railroad right-of-way.
In 1887 he came to Tomahawk as a permanent resident and this city has been his home ever since, except the few brief months spent in the south.
On his arrival here he opened a meat market and that venture at once proved a success. For many years the market was operated in the building now occupied by the Copes Hardware store. In 1920 he purchased the Hyman building which he remodeled into one of the finest markets in the state and together with slaughtering house, sausage plant, etc., constituted one of the finest plants to be found anywhere.
Naturally as should be expected of the early pioneers of the city, he became interested in the logging business and for many years was one of the largest operators in this vicinity. His operations were generally east and southeast of the city.
He was also interested in many other enterprises both here and in other states. He was a large land holder within the city limits and part of the city is now recorded as Thielman’s addition to the city.
Taking such a prominent part in the business life of the city it would seem natural that he would be prominent in politics also and this we find to be true. For many years he served as supervisor from his ward and eventually was elected as county chairman – the first chairman to be elected from without the confines of the county seat.
In the city he served as president of the fire and police commission and as president of the park board. It was during this time that Bradley Park was acquired for the future prosperity of the city.
He was nominated and elected to the highest office of this city on several different occasions - that of mayor and for 12 years he held this position with honor to himself and credit to the city. In his deliberation with that body his thoughts of the beautifying of the city were always foremost. Let it be said of Mr. Thielman, that he served the city as though it was his own business that he was looking after.
In politics he was a democrat and he took an active part in the deliberations of that party. He was a member of Merrill Lodge No. 696, B.P.O.E and was one of the early members of the local Order of Maccabees. He was a member of many lumber organizations. Since he has been connected with the oil industry in the south, he has been successively a director and later vice-president of the Oil Fields Corporation.
Of any public movement for the good of the city, he was at once an enthusiastic supporter, not only with his physical and mental aid but financial as well.
And best of all, Bob Thielman was a friend to every man no matter what his station in life might be. Be he either lumber baron or the lowest “lumber jack” it made no difference. To this quality then can be attributed his large acquaintance on every hand. His name is familiar throughout the entire state and to every one of these his death will bring a pang of genuine sorrow.
Mr. Thielman was married on November 28, 1888 at Custer, Portage county, to Miss Mary Eiden. Three children have been born to this union, all daughters, namely: Ada, now Mrs. Herman Zellmer, Vena, now Mrs. E.H. Welfley and Elda, now Mrs. L.M. Osborne. Four grandchildren, Marguerite Welfey, Helen Osborne and Robert and Lloyd Zellmer with his wife survive him. All live in this city.
He is also survived by five brothers and three sisters: Julius, now of this city, Louis of Harrison, Albert of Spokane, Wash., Theodore of Milwaukee and Emil of Merrill. The three sisters are Mrs. John Meyer of Chicago, Mrs. H.J. Schmiel of Merrill and Mrs. Emil Kielgas of Duluth, Minn. Two other sisters preceded him in death, namely Mrs. John Teeling and Mrs. Henry Haase.
Funeral services were conducted at his late home on Rice Avenue and Fourth street on Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock conducted by Rev. R.G. Heddon of the Congregational church. Music was by a mixed quartette of the Congregational choir. Rev. Heddon chose his text from John 11:25 and gave the subject of his talk “The Great Hope”. He paid a fitting eulogy to the departed citizen who has taken such a prominent part in the affairs of a city.
Due to Mr. Thieldman’s place in the official life of the city, the mayor, city councilmen and city officers attended the funeral services in a body. Business houses closed their doors during the hours of the funeral. The funeral concourse to Calvary cemetery where interment took place consisted of literally hundreds of cars and spoke in mute terms in which Mr. Thielman was regarded by his fellow townsmen.
The pall bearers were Messrs. Edw. Houlehan, Gust Wurl, H.A. Ateherson, John Welfley, A.E. Sutliff and Frank Clark. The floral offerings were both numerous and exceedingly beautiful again speaking in terms of high regard.
Those who were here from out of the city to attend the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. John Meyer, Chicago; Mrs. E.C. Kielgas, Duluth., Minn; Mr. Frederick Kyes, Gary, Ind; Miss Esther Thielman, Chicago; Mrs. Ed. Grob, Wausau, Wis; Theo, Thielman, Milwaukee; Dr. and Mrs. H.E. Bode, Merrill, Wis; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Thieldman, Merrill, Wis; Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Schmiel, Merrill, Wis; Mrs. Martha Elsaesser, Merrill, Wis; Mr. Bobby Thielman, Milwaukee, Wis; Miss Viola Thielman, Milwaukee, Wis; Juliau Thielmaa, International Falls, Minn; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Thielman, Harrison, Wis; Mr. and Mrs. Julius Mueller, Wausau, Wis; Miss Barbara Eiden, Miss Mary Eiden, Peter Eiden, Wausau; Ed. Well Known Lady, a Resident of Sharon for Forty-Six years, Passes to Her Final Rest

Mrs. Matt Eiden passes away at the family home in the town of Sharon, just south of Ellis, at 5 o’clock last Sunday afternoon, the result of dropsy and heart failure. She had been in poor health for the past three years and for about two weeks before the end had been unable to lie down, the final dissolution coming very suddenly and without warning while reclining in a chair, she having partaken of some refreshments shortly before and the other members of the family had just finished supper.
Mary Koltz was born at Reinsfeldt, Germany, Jan. 2, 1842, and came to America when a young woman, arriving in the town of Sharon, July 3, 1865. The following October she was married to Matt Eiden and to them seven children were born, five of whom survive their mother and are left to comfort their father. These are Peter of Port Washington, Nicholas J. of Arnott, Misses Mary and Barbara and Mrs. Julius Mueller, who are at home. There are also two brothers, Peter Koltz of Arnott and John Koltz of Sharon. The Eiden families are among the early settlers of Sharon in the vicinity of Ellis and all of them have been highly respected throughout the community. The now deceased lady commanded the esteem of neighbors, friends and acquaintances and was always willing to do her part for the betterment of the community in which she lived and to aid those in sickness and distress. Her taking away is indeed a sad blow to the aged husband, worthy daughters and sons. During her long illness nothing was left undone to better her condition, but to no avail and the end came without a pain or struggle.
The funeral took place from St Martin’s Catholic church, Ellis, of which Mrs. Eiden was one of the first members at 10 o’clock this forenoon, Rev. Geo. A. Schemmer officiating, with interment in the adjoining cemetery. The last rites were largely attended by relatives and friends from the surrounding country, a number from this city also driving out to pay their last respects.
