Jacob Dobersztajn/Dobersztyn1
M, b. 25 July 1848, d. 27 February 1918
Jacob Dobersztajn/Dobersztyn was born on 25 July 1848 at Prussia.2 He was the son of Andrew Dobersztajn/Dobersztyn.2 Jacob Dobersztajn/Dobersztyn married Maria Magdalena Jazdzewski, daughter of Michael Jazdzewski and Magdalena Kowalikowa, on 8 September 1872 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Chicago, Cook Co, IL.3 Jacob and Mary came to Stevens Point sometime between 7 Jan 1880, when daughter Lucy was born (in Chicago) and 17 Jan 1883, when Mary was born (in Stevens Point). On October 29, 1884, Jacob went before the clerk of the circuit court of Portage County and declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States. On that declaration it states that he emigrated to the U.S. and landed at the port of Baltimore "on or about the month of March in the year 1872".4 Jacob was a lumber mill worker by trade.5 Jacob Dobersztajn/Dobersztyn and Maria Magdalena Jazdzewski appeared on the 1905 WI State Census of 4th Ward Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI, enumerated 1 June 1905. Their children Maximiliam, Elizabeth and John were listed as living with them.6 Jacob Dobersztajn/Dobersztyn and Maria Magdalena Jazdzewski appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI, at 525 Meadow Street, enumerated 27 April 1910. Their children Maximiliam and John were listed as living with them.7 It was also listed in the 1910 Census that Mary and Jacob had 10 children, 6 of whom were still alive.7 Apparently Jacob and Mary had a hard life. In the July 8, 1914 edition of the Stevens Point Journal there appeared the following article that describes how they needed aid from the city because they were destitute.
Controller Rogers, in a letter to the council, stated that Jacob Duberstein who, with his wife, resides at 525 Meadow Street, has applied for aid. Mr. Duberstein is sixty-seven years of age and his wife sixty-six and both are in poor health and destitute circumstances, an investigation disclosed. Temporary assistance has been granted there and Mr. Duberstein is ready to deed to the city his residence property at the above address worth, in the controller's judgment, easily $900 or $1000 with an encumbrance of $100, in return for a $10 allowance from the city each month, this to be reduced to $5 at the death of either husband or wife. The proposition also includes free medical attendance from the city physician, fuel and the use of the residence while either Mr. or Mrs. Duberstein live. Aldermen Schenk and Urowski, who had also investigated the matter, stated that conditions were as set forth in the controller's report and recommended that inasmuch as the city would be obliged to support the aged couple in any event, it would be wise to take over the property. That Mr. and Mrs. Duberstein have a number of outstanding debts for provisions was a statement made and it resulted in considerable delay to proceeding. Alderman Krembs wanted the merchants protected but Alderman Hyer's motion to accept the proposition and to have the proper officials take over the property was carried. It was implied that those holding bills against Mr. Duberstein could present them to the council for consideration and, if it was the belief that the city should have granted aid in the past to Mr. Duberstein, the accounts would doubtless be paid.
Jacob died on 27 February 1918 at Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI, at age 69.2,8 He was buried on 2 March 1918 at St. Peter's Cemetery, Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI.2
