Anton Mancl
1821 - 1887

Anton Mancl was born in Bohemia, now Czechoslovakia, in 1821, had been married to Anna Weela, Anna Cgyhoiva and his last wife was Mary Chiha. He immigrated to this country in 1862. He settled in Kossuth, now known as Francis Creek. I believe he worked for the Chlaupeks in the sawmill or brewery until he found the land to purchase. He bought 40 acres for $200 on May 19, 1864 and the land is about 1-½ miles north of Fisch Mills. The Muskicot River runs through the southeast corner of the land, which was at one time the Indian Village. The Indian burial ground is on one corner of his farm and for many years the Indians would come once a year to visit their dead.

He had ten children. Mary, Anna, James also called Wenzel, Anton, Adolph and Frank which were born in Bohemia. Dora, Antonia, Josephine and John were born on the farm in Carlton Township, Kewaunee County. Father Maly built St. Joseph Church in Norman about 1884 and they were members of that church. Before that they attended mass in the log cabin.

The older boys played musical instruments and when they were at work they put them up in the rafters in the barn so the younger children couldn't play with them, but John would take the horns and violin down and practice on them and return them before his brothers returned. One day he was caught in the act and they found out he could play pretty good so from that time on he could use the instruments. John was ten years old when his father Anton Mancl died which was on October 8, 1887.

In Anton's will be bequeath his wife Mary one fourth part of all grain, hay and potatoes raised on said land. Also one cow, red color and sufficient place in my present dwelling house. The farm and personal property was left to daughter Antonia and she had to take care of all debts and give $100 to Josepha and also to John.
