Portage County Early Marriage Index
through 1900
"This information is not a legal vital record index. Inclusion of any information does not constitute legal verification of the fact of the event."
This Marriage Index has been generously donated to The Stevens Point Genealogical Society by Dr. G. L. Miller. The marriages have been gathered from various sources, but most of them have been copied directly from Portage County courthouse records. Other sources include local newspapers, biographies, obituaries, family histories, etc.
The format of the records in this index is as follows:
Names of the couple | Date of Marriage | Source |
A "c" following the date indicated that the date of marriage is not shown on the Court House record; the date given is the date of the marriage certificate, which is usually, though not always, the same. The source codes are:
- C Office of Register of Deeds, Portage County Court House
- J The Stevens Point Journal (1871 - )
- G The Gazette, an early Stevens Point newspaper (1878 - 1923)
- P The Wisconsin Pinery, another early newspaper (1853 - 1886)
- T The Plover Times (1866 - 1881)
- B Commemorative Biographical
Record of the Upper Wisconsin (J. H. Beers &
Co., 1895) - H Histories and Memories of the Town of Belmont (Wayne A. Guyant, 1986)
- S A Standard History of
Portage County Wisconsin, Volume II (The Lewis
Publishing Company, 1919) - O Other sources (biographies, obituaries, family histories, etc.)
As with all records of this type, spelling of names should be taken with a measure of skepticism. Records of this era were all hand-written, and penmanship was not always the best. Newspaper typesetters were likely to misread the hand-written notes that had been given to them, and garbled names were the result. Even original courthouse records may be inaccurate. For complete accuracy, if the source indicates, you should request an official copy from the Portage County Register of Deeds office.
NOTE: If you can't find the marriage you are looking for in the index below, check out our Volunteers/Lookups page. We have access to some of the marriages at Sacred Heart Church, Polonia and St. Casimir Church, Hull. It's possible (especially for the older marriages) that they were not recorded at the court house.
