Johann Platta1

     Johann Platta was born on 27 December 1845 at Prussia.1,2 He was the son of Joseph Platta and Marianna Konopacka.1 Johann Platta emigrated in 1858 aboard the S. S. Atlantic along with his parents Joseph Platta and Marianna Konopacka, having departed from Bremen, Germany. The ship arrived at the Port of New York on 9 Aug 1858.3 Johann Platta married Josephine Marchel in October 1870.2

John Platta Dies, Veteran of Civil War
Resident of Town of Sharon 72 Years Succumbs Today at Age of 88

John Platta, age 88 years, Civil war veteran and a resident of the town of Sharon for 72 years, died this morning at 8:15 o'clock at his home at Ellis, town of Sharon. He had been ill and confined to bed for the past three weeks. Mr. Platta was born on December 27, 1845, in Poland. He came to this country at the age of 16 years with his parents. The family located in the town of Sharon. Mr. Platta enlisted in the Civil war in October, 1864, as private in Company B, 12th regiment of Wisconsin infantry. He received his honorable discharge on July 16, 1865. His marriage to Miss Josephine Marchel of Sharon took place in October, 1870. Mrs. Platta died seven years ago. Mr. Platta had lived in the town of Sharon since coming to this country 72 years ago and was a well known farmer there. He held the office of town supervisor for 12 years and was a member of the Catholic Knights. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Frances Petarski of Kempster, Wis., Mrs. Frank Pliska of Custer, Mrs. Mary Wanta and Mrs. Emma Kluck of Callon, Marathon county, and Mrs. Max Kopchinski of Ellis; four sons, Joseph Platta of Ellis, Victor and John Platta of Hatley and Nick Platta of Milwaukee; one sister, Mrs. Veronica Yach of Hatley; 55 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Martin's church at Ellis. Burial will take place in Sacred Heart cemetery at Polonia. The body is at the family home at Ellis where it will be until the time of the funeral. Johann Platta died on 6 July 1934 at Ellis, Portage Co, WI, at age 88.2

Joseph Platta1

M, b. March 1820, d. 14 April 1907
     Joseph Platta was born in March 1820 at Koscierzyna, Koscierzyna, Gdansk, West Prussia.2,3 He married Marianna Konopacka, daughter of Stanislaus Konopacki and Margaretha Piechowska, on 21 January 1845 at Koscierzyna, Koscierzyna, Gdansk, West Prussia.2 Joseph AND Marianna emigrated in 1858 aboard the S. S. Atlantic having departed from Bremen, Germany. They came from the village of Skorzewo in the "powiat" (county) of Koscierski in what was then called West Prussia. Also listed on the passenger list was, Johann, Victoria, Marianna and Catharine. The ship arrived at the Port of New York on 9 Aug 1858.4

Joseph, along with Adam Kleinsmith and John Zynda, were among the earliest Polish settlers in Portage County arriving in 1858.5 On 22 Aug 1859 Joseph appeared before the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Portage County, WI and declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States.6 On 18 Aug 1866 Joseph purchased 40 acres in the townhip of Sharon (the NE4 SE4 of Section 30 in Township 25N, Range 9E) at the cost of $1.25 per acre from the Land Office in Stevens Point, WI.

Joseph Platta and Marianna Konopacka appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Ellis, Portage Co, WI, enumerated 23 June 1870, reporting the family owned real estate valued at $500 and personal property valued at $280. Joseph is listed as being a citizen of the United States.. Their children Veronica, Michael, Peter and Frances were listed as living with them.7 Joseph Platta and Marianna Konopacka appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of an unknown place , enumerated 21 June 1880. Their children Michael, Peter and Frances were listed as living with them.8 Joseph Platta and Marianna Konopacka appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Town of Sharon, Portage Co, WI, enumerated 9 June 1900, in the household of their son Mike. The census also states that Marianna and Joseph had 11 children, 6 of whom were alive in 1900.9 Joseph Platta died on 14 April 1907 at Town of Sharon, Portage Co, WI, at age 87; the register says Josephina but I believe this is a mistake and it should have been copied Josephus.10 He was buried on 17 April 1907 at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Polonia, Portage Co, WI.10

Born on the old home farm in the town of Sharon 68 years ago today, and residing there continuously since, Michael Platta passed from life at 7 o'clock this morning. He had been an invalid nearly all the time for the past two years. Surviving are his widow, Anastasia Platta, and the following daughters and sons: Mrs. Victor Eckendorf, Sharon; Mrs. Joseph Ostrowski, Fancher; Mrs. Joseph Jakubeck and Mrs. Nick Lamken, Sharon; Mrs. Frank Walkush, Dewey; Felix Platta, Chicago; Frank Platta, Dewey; Alex Platta, Fancher; John, Nick and Jacob Platta, at home. The funeral will be held at Sacred Heart church, Polonia at 9 a.m. Monday, with interment in the parish cemetery.

S. Atlantic along with her parents Joseph Platta and Marianna Konopacka, having departed from Bremen, Germany. The ship arrived at the Port of New York on 9 Aug 1858.6 Victoria Platta married Edward Haertel on 14 June 1868 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI. He died within the year..7,3 Victoria Platta married Frank Drefcinski, son of Albert Drefcinski and Magdalena Radizinski, on 22 May 1870 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI.7,8 Victoria Platta and Frank Drefcinski appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI, enumerated 10 June 1880, reporting the family lived on Meadow Street and that Frank was a Teamster. Their children Charles, Marcena and Frank were listed as living with them.9 Victoria Platta and Frank Drefcinski appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI, enumerated 15 June 1900, reporting the family lived at 700 6th Avenue. Their children Frank, Valentine, Anna, Johanna, John and Florence were listed as living with them.10 Victoria Platta and Frank Drefcinski appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI, enumerated 25 April 1910, reporting the family was living at 700 6th Avenue. Their children John and Florence were listed as living with them.11 Victoria Platta died on 1 May 1929.1

The following obituary appeared 1 May 1929 in the Stevens Point Daily Journal, Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI:


     Victoria, aged 81, widow of the late Frank Drefcinski, Sr., and one of Stevens Point's earliest settlers, coming here from German-Poland when she was a young girl, died at the home of one of her daughters, Mrs. John Olbrantz, 829 North Second Street, at 4 o'clock this morning. She had resided with the Olbrantz family for the past 15 years. Mrs. Drefcinski had been in comparatively good health until last Saturday, when she was taken ill and rapidly failed. She was married twice, the first time at the age of 17 to Edward Haertel, who died within a year, and her second marriage, to Mr. Drefcinski, was in 1872. The sons and daughters are Mrs. Nick Rozinski, Frank, Valentine and John Drefcinski and Mrs. Olbrantz of this city, Mrs. Henry Heldt of Chippewa Falls and Mrs. Johanna Sweek of Hull. Her only brother, John Platta, a Civil War veteran, lives in the town of Sharon, and a sister, Mrs. Anton Yach, at Hatley. There are 32 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A total of 15 children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Drefcinski, of whom eight preceded their mother in death. The funeral will be held from St. Peter's Church at 8:30 Saturday morning, with interment to follow in the parish cemetery.


The following funeral announcement appeared 4 May 1929 in the Stevens Point Daily Journal, Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI:


     Mrs. Victoria Drefcinski, who died last Wednesday morning at the home of one of her daughters, Mrs. John Olbrantz, 829 North Second Street, was buried from St. Peter's church this morning. Requiem mass was offered up at 8:30 o'clock by Rev. S.A. Elbert and interment was made in the parish cemetery. The casket bearers were Edwin Mrozinski, Lloyd and Edward Sweek, Louis, Roman and George Drefcinski. In charge of the many floral offerings were Irene Sweek, Frances and Florence Drefcinski and Eleanor, Lorraine and Ramona Olbrantz.

She was buried on 4 May 1929 at St. Peter's Cemetery, Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI.1
