YEAR-OLD CHILD DIES OF POISON EATEN IN PILLS
(Special to the Journal)
Amherst, Wis., Jan. 19--Pills containing strychnine and belladonna which Charles, year and four months' old child of Mr. and Mrs. George Helbach of the town of Scandinavia, Waupaca county, ate while at play in his parents' home this morning, caused his death here just before noon.
The boy is believed to have swallowed six or seven of the pills, and when his parents learned what he had done after he had become ill, they rushed him to Amherst. He was taken with a convulsion on the way to the village and died three minutes after he was brought into the office of Dr. C. E. Smith, village physician.
The strychnine ingredient in the pills is believed to have been the cause of death. His mother had been at a hospital, only recently returning home.
Three other children are in the family, Harold, Neva and Frederick.
The Helbachs live four and one-half miles east of here on the Amherst-Scandinavia road. They are on the old Julius Thompson place now owned by S. B. Shambeau of Waupaca.
Mrs. Helbach is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Adams of Almond Town.
