Descendants of Alvaro C. Achilles

 

 

 

 

Generation One

 

 

     1.  Alvaro C.1 Achilles[1],[2],[3],[4] was born on 30 May 1824 at Potton, Brome Co., Quebec, Canada.[5],[6]  He married Drusilla H. Traver on 30 Dec 1847 at Georgeville, Stanstead Co., Quebec, Canada.[7]  He died on 11 Jan 1902 at Almond, Portage Co, WI, at age 77.[8],[9]  He was buried on 12 Jan 1902 at Almond City Cemetery, Almond, Portage Co, WI.

    

 

Alvaro Copp Achilles came to Portage County, Wisconsin in the 1850's.  He was born in Canada in 1824.  He was married in his native country to Drusilla H. Traver.  He was a farmer.  When gold was discovered in California in 1849 he contracted the fever and was one of those to make the weary, perilous journey,  In 1855 he came to Portage County, making the trip by ox-team and shortly thereafter located on a farm on the Stevens Point wagon road in Almond Township, which he purchased from the U.S. government.  He grew hops on his land.   They were the parents of 7 children.  He was a charter member of Plover Lodge of Masons and belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church.      Children of Alvaro C.1 Achilles and Drusilla H. Traver were as follows:

                +   2       i.            Ezra Copp2 Achilles.

                +   3       ii.            Hannah Louise Achilles.

                     4      iii.            Winthrop Achilles was born in 1853 at Georgeville, Stanstead Co, Quebec, Canada.  He died in 1855.

                +   5     iv.            Emma Jane Achilles.

                +   6      v.            Almina Achilles.

                     7     vi.            Ella Luella Achilles was born on 6 May 1860 at Almond, Portage Co, WI.[10]  She died on 14 Jun 1888 at Almond, Portage Co, WI, at age 28.[11]  She was buried on 16 Jun 1888 at Almond Cemetery, Almond, Portage Co, WI.

     On the morning of June 14, 1888, Miss Ella L. Achilles bid adieu to her family and friends and passed from the shadows of earth to the joys of heaven.  Miss Achilles was born in the town of Almond in March, 1860, was educated at the Almond High School and has for the past eight years been a faithful teacher in our schools, the last six years in charge of one of the rooms of our village school.  She was buried Saturday, June 16 in our village cemetery, Rev. F. B. Sherwin preaching the funeral sermon.  Ella L. Achilles is buried in the Almond City Cemetery.  Her gravestone reads “Ella L, daughter of D.H. and A.C.

Achilles died June 14, 1888, aged 28 yr 3 mo 8 days.”

                     8     vii.            Harrison Achilles was born on 26 Feb 1863 at Almond, Portage Co, WI.  He died on 6 Apr 1863 at Almond, Portage Co, WI.

     His gravestone at Almond City Cemetery reads: “Harrison, infant died Apr 6, 1863. 1 mo 9 days.”

                     9    viii.            Henry Achilles was born in 1867 at Almond, Portage Co, WI.  He died on 10 Dec 1868 at Almond, Portage Co, WI.

     His gravestone in Almond City Cemetery reads:  “Henry, infant, died Dec 10, 1868.”

 

Generation Two

 

 

     2.  Ezra Copp2 Achilles (Alvaro1)[12] was born on 4 Jul 1848 at Georgeville, Stanstead Co, Quebec, Canada.[13]  He married Mary L. Trickey in 1874 at Oasis, Waushara Co, WI.  He died on 13 Mar 1895 at Almond, Portage Co, WI, at age 46.[14]

     His gravestone from Almond City Cemetery reads:  “Ezra C. Achilles b. July 4, 1848 d. Mar 13, 1895.  Wife - Mary L. Achilles b. Sept 24, 1855 d. Feb 23 1920.”

     Children of Ezra Copp2 Achilles and Mary L. Trickey were:

                   10       i.            Florence3 Achilles was born on 30 Jul 1875 at Almond, Portage Co, WI.[15]  She married Charles Hamilton on 26 Jul 1896 at Buena Vista, WI.[16]  She died circa 1962, Beaver Dam WI.

 

     3.  Hannah Louise2 Achilles (Alvaro1) was born on 25 Jun 1850 at Georgeville, Stanstead Co, Quebec, Canada.[17]  She married George Gerry Crowell on 14 Feb 1871 at Almond, Portage Co, WI.  She died on 12 Dec 1898 at Almond, Portage Co, WI, at age 48.

     A pioneer woman of Portage County was Hannah Louise Achilles, born in 1850, at Georgeville, Stanstead County, Quebec.  She came to the town of Almond at the age of 5, traveling much of the way by ox-drawn wagon.  Her father, Alvaro, was a seasoned traveler who had twice made the journey to California's gold country.  Hannah, one of eight children, married George Gerry Crowell when she was 20.  Crowell, a native of Maine, was an Almond merchant, and the home he built in 1876 was occupied for 91 year, until 1967, by members of the family.  It is still one of the larger homes in Almond.  George and Hannah's son, Orestes Alvaro Crowell, founded the Portage County Bank at Almond and the family was in the banking business there until 1952.  George Crowell died in 1891 and Hannah in 1898.

     Children of Hannah Louise2 Achilles and George Gerry Crowell were as follows:

                   11       i.            Orestes Alvaro3 Crowell was born on 5 Oct 1872 at Almond, Portage Co, WI.  He died on 17 Aug 1967 at Almond, Portage Co, WI, at age 94.

                   12       ii.            Edna Crowell was born on 25 Nov 1874.  She died in 1893.

                   13      iii.            Lulu Crowell was born in 1877.  She died in 1878.

                   14     iv.            Gerry Elbridge Crowell was born on 12 Jun 1881 at Almond, Portage Co, WI.  He died on 14 Apr 1966 at or 1967 at age 84.

                   15      v.            George Crowell was born on 25 Jul 1887.  He died in 1973.

 

     5.  Emma Jane2 Achilles (Alvaro1) was born on 18 Aug 1856 at Almond, Portage Co, WI.[18],[19],[20]  She married Heman Alonzo Soule, son of Solomon Soule and Lucinda Alger, on 14 Sep 1874 at Almond, Portage Co, WI.[21]  She died on 2 Feb 1940 at Stevens Point, Portage Co WI, at age 83 (Myocarditis Chronic, 2 yrs. duration).[22],[23]  She was buried on 4 Feb 1940 at Almond Cemetery, Almond, Portage Co, WI.

     Mrs. Emma Soule aged 83 a resident of Portage Co., for many years passed away at the home of her son Elmer, in Stevens Point, Friday, Jan 26, 1939.  Mrs. Soule was born on Aug 18, 1856 in Canada.  During her infancy the family came to the U.S. and located on a farm in the town of Almond.  She resided at the home of her parents, Alvaro and Drusilla Achilles, until her marriage, which took place Sept 14, 1874, in Almond to Heman Soule of Almond.  The couple resided on a farm in the town of Almond until Mr. Soule passed away October 30, 1900.  Mrs. Soule continued to live on the homestead for a time and later moved to the village of Almond.  About three years ago she moved to Stevens Point.  She is mourned by two sons, Ellery Soule of Rhinelander and Elmer E. Soule of Stevens Point and a daughter, Mrs. Edith Gustin of Seymour.  She was a member of the Almond Methodist Church and of the Eastern Star lodge of Almond.  She is buried in the Almond City Cemetery.

     Children of Emma Jane2 Achilles and Heman Alonzo Soule all born at Almond, Portage Co, WI, were as follows:

                   16       i.            Edith May3 Soule was born on 6 Jul 1875.[24],[25]  She married William Gustin, son of William Gustin and Caroline Spinney Buzzell, on 19 Feb 1896 at Plainfield, Waushara Co, WI.[26],[27]  She died on 8 Apr 1943 at Waupun, Dodge Co, WI, at age 67.[28],[29],[30],[31]  She was buried on 11 Apr 1943 at Almond, Portage Co, WI.

                   17       ii.            Elmer Edwin Soule was born on 13 May 1879.[32],[33]  He married Marie Althea Collier on 26 Mar 1902 at Hortonville, Outagamie Co, WI.[34],[35]  He died on 27 Sep 1960 at Tucson, AZ, at age 81.[36]

                   18      iii.            Ellery Alfred Soule was born on 21 May 1884.[37],[38]  He married Carrie G. Young on 8 Mar 1905.  He died on 28 Sep 1949 at Rhinelander, WI, at age 65.[39],[40]

     Ellery Soule was born on 21 May 1884 in the town of Almond, son of the late Heman and Emma Soule.  He resided in the town of Almond and Stevens Point prior to moving to Rhinelander 20 years ago.  He operated an automobile business at Almond.  While residing in Stevens Point he was employed by the Buick Automobile Dealership.  Since going to Rhinelander he worked in a paper mill.  Mr. Soule was married in 1905 to Miss Carrie Young of the town of Almond.

 

     6.  Almina2 Achilles (Alvaro1) was born on 25 Sep 1858.[41]  She married John Milton Smart on 14 Oct 1884 at Plainfield, Waushara Co, WI.  She died on 3 Dec 1934 at Plainfield, Waushara Co, WI, at age 76.[42]

     Mrs. Almina E. Smart passed from sleep to the life beyond, Monday morning, December 3 after several months of illness at her home. She lived in the Plainfield vicinity all her life.  Almina E. Achilles was born at Lone Pine, Sept 25, 1858, the daughter of Alvaro and Drusilla Achilles.  On October 14, 1884 she was married at Plainfield to John M. Smart.  They lived at Almond until 1894 when they came to Plainfield.  Mr. Smart died June 16, 1928.  Her sister, Mrs. Emma Soule made her home with her for the past three years.  Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Smart, a son who died at an early age, and a daughter, Ella, who passed away in 1910.  Gravestone in Almond City Cemetery reads:  “Almina E. Smart 1854-1934.”

     Children of Almina2 Achilles and John Milton Smart were as follows:

                   19       i.            John3 Smart was born on 7 Aug 1890.  He died on 17 Mar 1891.

                   20       ii.            Ella Smart was born on 27 May 1892.[43]  She died on 19 Nov 1910 at age 18.
